In healthcare settings, hand hygiene is consistently shown to be the most effective and simple means of preventing the transmission of infectious diseases. Studies demonstrating the effectiveness of hand washing in disease prevention date back over a century and a half and occur mostly in in-patient settings. Clean hands are equally important in dental settings, as they afford protection for both the patient and the dental professional.
